5 YouTube Channels to Learn English That Don’t Feel Like Studying

No, it’s not BBC News or TED Talks. These are the five underrated channels I actually send to my students, and why they work.

“How can I improve my English fast?” It’s the question almost every English learner asks. And let me guess—the answer you usually hear? “Just watch more English videos.”

So you open a TED Talk, listen carefully, and realise you understand about half of it. Ten minutes later, you close the tab feeling more frustrated than motivated.

As an English teacher, I’ve seen this happen again and again. You’re told to watch the news, documentaries, or educational videos, but if you don’t actually enjoy what you’re watching, how long can you really keep it up?

After years of teaching, I’ve come to believe that learning a language comes down to two things: consistency and passion. Consistency keeps you moving forward, but passion is what makes you want to keep going.

That’s why I’m always looking for channels that are fun first, educational second. BBC News and TED Talks are useful, but you already know about them. Here are five channels that might actually make you want to keep learning.

1. Easy English

The perfect starting point

Easy English YouTube channel, animated everyday English conversations for beginners

If you’re just starting out, this is where I’d send you. Easy English focuses on the conversations you’ll actually have in real life: ordering at a restaurant, seeing a doctor at the hospital, checking in at the airport.

Friendly animations and clear subtitles make every line easy to follow, so you can pick up the target language and mimic it straight away. Each video is only around five minutes, short enough to fit into any day.

Five minutes may not sound like much, but done daily, it builds a solid foundation and makes the rest of your learning journey far smoother.

Teacher’s tip: Try shadowing: pause after each line and repeat it out loud, copying the rhythm and tone. It feels a little silly at first, but it works wonders for your confidence.

2. Arnel’s Everyday English

Grammar, finally explained

Arnel's Everyday English YouTube channel, animated English grammar lessons

Grammar has a reputation for being the boring part of English. Arnel’s channel quietly proves that wrong. The thing I really like about Arnel’s videos is how naturally she explains things. She doesn’t just tell you the rule. She breaks it down, gives you plenty of examples, and shows you how it works in real sentences.

Topics that usually cause headaches, like the present perfect or tricky prepositions, become surprisingly easy to understand. You’ll also start noticing these grammar patterns when you come across them in everyday English.

Teacher’s tip: One grammar point a week is plenty. Watch the video, then write three sentences about your own life using it.

3. Dr Izzy Sealey

English with a dose of motivation

Dr Izzy Sealey YouTube channel, study tips and motivation from a UK doctor

Dr Izzy Sealey is a young doctor based in the UK who shares honest, practical videos about her exam preparation journey, the lessons she’s learned, and how to become more productive and confident.

For English learners, she’s a gem. Her clear British accent, moderate pace and precise pronunciation make her easy to follow, even if you’re still building your listening skills.

The real bonus is how inspiring her content is. You’ll come away motivated to work on your own goals, having improved your English without even noticing.

Teacher’s tip: Choose videos on topics that matter to you right now, like study tips before an exam. When the content is personal, the English sticks.

4. BBC Global

Real conversations, bite-sized

BBC Global YouTube channel, weekly interviews with Katty Kay

Don’t mix this one up with BBC News. BBC Global features a weekly interview with professionals on today’s big topics, running the gamut from technology to marriage to raising children.

The conversations are led by veteran journalist Katty Kay, who has a knack for asking the questions you’d want to ask yourself. Because guests speak naturally rather than from a script, you’ll hear how native speakers really talk: the idioms, the phrasing, the way they soften an opinion or make a point.

Most episodes run about ten minutes. That’s one bus ride, one train journey or one drive to work. Treat it like a podcast and you’ll learn without ever feeling overwhelmed.

Teacher’s tip: Keep a phrase notebook. Write down one expression per episode and try to use it that week.

5. WIRED

Last but not least, learn from real experts

WIRED YouTube channel, experts explaining complex topics in simple English

WIRED isn’t an English-learning channel, and that’s exactly why it’s on this list. Here, real experts such as scientists, doctors, engineers and chefs explain difficult subjects in the simplest way possible.

Start with the 5 Levels series, where an expert explains one concept to five people, from a child to a fellow professional. You hear the same idea move from simple words to advanced vocabulary, which is brilliant for stretching your English. Then try Tech Support, where experts answer the internet’s most curious questions about their field.

It’s learning twice over: new knowledge and new English, in the same video.

Teacher’s tip: Watch once with subtitles, then again without. You’ll catch far more the second time.

How to Make It Stick

Please don’t turn this list into another to-do list. A few simple habits will take you much further:

  • Start with one or two. Pick the channels that match your level and interests.
  • Keep it little and often. Ten to fifteen minutes a day beats two hours once a week.
  • Forget perfection. You don’t need to catch every word. Understanding the main idea is real progress.
  • Follow your curiosity. If a video bores you, skip it. Enjoyment is what keeps you coming back.

Learning English doesn’t have to feel like a chore. Find content you genuinely enjoy, show up a little every day, and you’ll be amazed at how far you go.

Happy watching!
